Weihnachts-Matutin / Christmas Matins

Rupert Huber, musical director of the WDR Rundfunkchor Cologne, was searching for a fitting program for the 2007 Christmas concert. An acquaintance showed him an old book that her father had given her as a present. It turned out to be an antiphonal from the early 15th century containing Gregorian chants. The pages were made of vellum, with music notation and text in a clear hand. It was also in fine condition and certainly from a Benedictine scriptorium. As if this were not enough, it contained an almost complete collection of the chants for Christmas Matins (liturgical chants of the hours, the Christmas Mass). It was probably written at the Benedictine Monastery of Gross Sankt Martin in Cologne.
